Comment Policy
Brian March 28th, 2007
Until recently, I always thought comment policies on blogs were not very important or useful. I have, however, had to spend some time lately thinking about what is an acceptable comment and should I just allow anyone to come here and post anything they wanted.
I have always been hesitant to delete comments because I did not want to assume the role of an editor. Generally the few comments that are posted here are kind, thoughtful, and polite. As with everything in life, though, there are few bad apples that attempt to spoil the whole basket.
With that said, I am going to start deleting comments that contain personal attacks, hate speech, excessive profanity, or other behavior that would be inappropriate in a civil conversation.

It is a good idea. Sad to say that you could be held accountable for a commenter’s wild views or attacks on others. You have good discretion and my support.
Thanks Chris. The threat of being held accountable as an editor is the main reason I have tried to avoid making judgment calls on whether or not to delete a particular comment.
The last thing I wanted was someone to say “you deleted my comment but left so and so’s up there.”
At least now I have some basic criteria to go by.
