State of the Commonwealth

Jayne and I just finished watching Governor Kaine’s State of the Commonwealth address on PBS.

Gov. Kaine’s website states that a full version of the speech will be available soon, but the prepared text is available here.

Senator Bell and Delegate Fredrick provided the Republican response. I think the gist of their statements was that they disagree with everything Gov. Kaine said and that they plan to work against him - instead of with him - every step of the way. That position will certainly not be very productive for the Commonwealth.

The primary focus of Gov. Kaine’s speech was transportation. I thought Gov. Kaine did a nice job outlining his plans and setting some lofty goals for his administration. Absent Democrats re-taking the majority in at least one chamber (most likely the Senate), I think it will be difficult for Gov. Kaine to see a lot of his legislative priorities come to fruition.

In Southwest Virginia, our transportation problem is very different from that of Northern Virginia. As opposed to needing more roads and less congestion, here in Dickenson County, we would love to see some of our main streets congested and our primary roads crowded with people.
