Virginia is for lovers of Nascar
Brian February 16th, 2006
Rarely will two of one’s true passions collide. Nascar.com, however, has this article on Virginia and racing.
The article includes a nice bio of Joe Weatherly, a Virginian who grew up in Norfolk and made his Nascar debut in the 1952 Southern 500. In 1953, Weatherly was Nascar’s Modified champ.
In case anyone did not notice, Kevin Harvick will be starting 28th in this Sunday’s Daytona 500. His teammate, Jeff Burton, from South Boston, Virginia, is on the pole.

I’ve had the privelege of watching (and rooting for) Virginian’s Weatherly, Curtis Turner, Jimmy Hensley (who, at Franklin County Speedway, gave me one of his full face helmets saying “five dollar helmets are for five dollar heads.”),and Glen (whose “legal” name is Glenn, “but I just didn’t want to write that extra n”)Wood.
BTW….
My paternal grandfather, a sawmiller in 1947, cut the boards for the original fence around Clay Earles’ new racetrack south of Martinsville.
Wow. That is awesome, Alton.
I always pull for the Virginia drivers, even when they are racing against my main driver.
The good news is, Denny Hamlin has several good things going for him.
1) From Virginia
2) Drives a Chevy
3) Young and Aggressive
Harvick???
Geeesh! Now Jeff Burton..Thats a classy racer!
That #31 cars paint really pops off the screen. After Burtons season last year I am looking forward to this one!
BP,
gotta tell you i’m in the tank for all the “gray beards”. duh… martin going off 10th and really glad Schrader is back in a ford (even tho the Wood’s moved to Charlotte). when he won rookie of the year for Junie in 85 i loved it. by the way does he ever get out of a race car?
tho i gotta tell you the Burtons are the bomb!
i bet beth and i use that Trickle line once a week. ‘member the daytona commercial where he said he was gonna win? that great line was, “…i think we get champaign!”
enjoy,

The NASCAR Nextel Cup season is ready to begin. The Daytona 500 is this weekend and my favorite driver is on the pole. The season for Jeff Burton sucked last year. He is off to a great start this season by winning the pole and finishing 7th in the Da…
