Dan Bowling, 3rd District
Brian December 16th, 2005
As expected by most folks, Dan Bowling was selected by Third District Democrats to run against Shea Cook, the Republican nominee. What was not expected, at least by me, was the intense Democratic caucus.
The two candidates were Dan Bowling, Tazewell County Supervisor, and Mickey McGlothlin, an attorney from Grundy. McGlothlin faced heavy criticism for his donations to several Republican candidates, including more than $100,000 to Jerry Kilgore.
McGlothlin might have lost his bid Thursday night due to questions about his campaign donations to candidates from the other side of the aisle.
The United Mine Workers union opposed his bid and handed out flyers outlining his contributions to various GOP candidates in state races.
According to campaign contribution data, McGlothlin’s $120,700 in total political contributions have swung 95 percent in favor of the GOP.
From everything I have heard, though, McGlothlin really is a Democrat and just supported Kilgore because he was from Southwest Virginia.
Anyway, we have our candidate now and it is time to work towards keeping a Democratic candidate in the Third District seat. From all accounts, Dan Bowling will be a strong candidate.
Here is Dan Bowling’s resume.

$100,000? My Lord. I support Dave Matthews Band because they’re from Charlottesville, but I didn’t try to bear any of their children.
“$100,000? My Lord.”
Yeah, that must have been what the voters in the Third District said too.
Smart man that McGlothlin!
Seriously, how deep can regional loyalty really be expected to run? If George Allen gets the nomination for president, I’m not voting for him no matter how much I love The Mother of Presidents.
Bust seriously, its good that this guy is from Tazewell right? That’s the republican part of the district?
By the way Brian, if there’s the option of doing some phone banking from this race from up here in NOVA, let me know how I can do it - I wanna help out.
Yeah, don’t think this passes the smell test. McGlothlin looks a bit like a troll.
Good job that the local party pulled together and blocked him.
Thanks for covering this Brian.
I question the wisdom of selecting someone from the “Republican” part of the district in a special election. Moreso than other elections, specials are all about turning out the base. Maybe the union folk will turn out Buchanan, so there won’t be much of a problem (they certainly were not supportive of McGlothlin), but I have to admit, it makes me a little nervous…
Ah, I just saw on his resume where he’s IEEE. That makes me feel better…

By way of adding my commentary, I have known Mickey McGlothlin for a long time and can confirm that he has always been a Democrat, save this one exception where he chose to support a fellow Southwest Virginian from the other side of the aisle. Each of us has to make his or her own decision in matters like this, but I can honestly say that, knowing Mickey as I do, his support of Kilgore was a matter of conscience, and not a matter of expediency (The man gave $100,000 to Kilgore’s political campaigns. Does this sound like an act of a man in dire need of political assistance? I think not.). Mickey did what he thought was right. Fault him for it if you will, but do not characterize this as an act of political expediency.
And, as to Waldo’s comment, that does not count because Dave Matthews is a Democrat.
I agree with Roy. I have known Mickey for several years, and can vouch for his integrity.
I think it’s hypocritical for the Union to criticize him for the donations. In the 1st District race, this year, they endorsed Terry Kilgore, and gave him money, over Rex McCarty, the son of a UMWA coal miner.
They have also endorsed William Wampler in the past.
Bowling is our nominee now, and he’ll get strong support from the voters.

This part of Tazewell is not the “republican” side it is very democratic there. Besides Dan Bowling is a great canidate for this position. So no reason for concern here!
