Bill Carrico v. Rick Boucher
Brian November 15th, 2005
As noted here and here, the rumor is that Del. Bill Carrico will challenge Congressman Rick Boucher in the Ninth District.
Boucher has reached “living legend” status and his stock continues to go up here in the Ninth.
However, I am glad to see that the Republicans are going to run someone who has lived in Virginia most of his life.
I, like most Southwest Virginians, think Rick Boucher does a great job representing us. For this reason, I cannot imagine anyone beating him in the near future (i.e., at least 10 years).

I know somebody who goes to church with Triplett’s parents-in law, and they say he’s thinking about it again. I would like to see a primary/convention fight. That would be nifty.
Ha. I think Kevin Triplett is probably a nice guy, but I just think is method for getting involved in politics is a little suspect.
I don’t suppose Carrico would resign his Delegate seat to concentrate on the race?
I agree, he should step down as Del. so he can run a stronger campaign.
That’s what I love about you Brian, your eternal optimism.
Seeing that the Virginia General Assembly is part-time (January-March) there really is no reason he would need to step down.
Only drawback is that Carrico could not raise money for his campaign while the GA is in session.
Last time I heard him mention the run he planned on retaining his seat.
Yeah, I am 99.9999% sure he would not resign; this is just wishful thinking on the part of us Dems, Adam.
Brian:
Yes, I realized that. Just thought I would rain on the parade.
Ah, I see.
On another note, is the “SaltBox” still in business? We used to drive up there sometimes from Emory and eat.
No, it closed about 3 years ago. There isn’t really any good “sit down” place in Saltville to eat now. The SaltBox was pretty good. I really liked the old photos of the town they used as decor. It also was a good place to hold meetings.
A Mexican restaurant opened recently at another location in town and supposedly has been doing extremely well. I haven’t been to it since I haven’t ever really liked Mexican food.
Saltville doesn’t have much luck keeping restaurants around. The location where the Mexican restaurant is located hasn’t been that successful for new businesses. Usually they close after 6 months.
I hate to hear that. But, that is the way with small towns these days.
Folks seem to only care about their proximity to a WalMart.
Here in my hometown, Clintwood, small businesses have had a hard time making it too.
AH, thanks! I knew it wasn’t CLINchport, but I just couldn’t get past the ‘clin’ part when I was trying to tell someone where Mr. Gray was from …
Question: are you seeing any benefit from the museum, or the Crooked Road?
On a totally different note, there are some rumors flying that the ’something better’ John Kilgore was talking about for his son Jerry, after Jerry got spanked by Tim Kaine, was Rick’s 9th District seat in Congress…. have you heard anything that might confirm or lay rest to this?
