Sharpie Motor Speedway?

Brian September 13th, 2005

The rumor is that Bristol Motor Speedway could be selling out….er… selling its name rights. This is not that uncommon anymore, since Charlotte and Sears Point have both did the same thing.

I suppose if the advantages of this move are passed on to the fans, it is good news. Otherwise, I hate to see tradition sacrificed for cash.

I would be strongly against changing BMS’s name. And name it after a marker? Come on.
The way the Bristol VA and TN City Councils cater to the speedway, I just know that in a year or two, I’ll be writing my return address as “Sharpie, VA, or Bruton Smith, VA”

No matter what corporation puts its name on there, I’m still calling it Bristol.

All I can call it is Bristol. I’ve been calling it that almost 2 decades now..

I agree, it will always be Bristol Motor Speedway to me too.

Just checked the stats. Sharpie has sponsored the Fall race since 2001. Their boy (Kurt Busch) has pretty much dominated since 2002. Their inflated ego must think that Sharpie and Bristol are now synonymous.

I’m for keeping it Bristol too.
