Environmental Issues Hit Home
Brian October 12th, 2004
I once heard a saying that "you don’t have to go around the world, to save the world." This old proverb is ringing true as of late. In the region that I come from in Virginia, we do not have the large environmental groups and organizations like large cities and metropolitan areas have, but that’s not to say we do not have pressing environmental issues of our own. My area is heavily dependent on coal mining and logging. Further, my family and extended family are extremely dependent on coal mining. Thus, I am burdened with the labor of looking at both sides.
However, we do have some advocacy and awareness groups that do their best to protect and preserve the natural resources of Southwest Virginia. Here is an example of one of their latest efforts to bring awareness about a timber harvest in the High Knob mountain range.
Once one has seen High Knob for themselves, it is easy to see why people feel so passionate about protecting it. Here is a site that has a lot information about High Knob and some good pictures.
